Millar
and Elizabeth (O'Keeffe) Millar
Born 26th April 1928 in Bristol, in a Flat
above the Theatre Royal, Bristol, of which my father was General Manager.
Educated by Christian Brothers, at Prior Park College, Bath. Somerset.
Joined the Navy,
Royal Marines, in 1945, and served in the UK for most of this time, becoming an
Instructor in Platoon Weapons, and Fieldcraft, at the ITC RM, Lympstone, Devon.
Joined the Metropolitan
Police, on demobilisation in 1948, and served in both
the West-End, and East-End of London, and at Hendon Police College, for
twenty-five years till 1973, when I retired from the
force.
Married Elizabeth O'Keeffe, of Coolflugh, St Ann's Hill, Co. Cork in 1956, and
set-up home in Woodford Green, Essex. where we lived till 1973. Upon retirement
from the police service, we bought a plot of land at Magoola, Dripsey, and built
a house for our retirement. Spent the first two years building the house, and
laying-out the garden. Then was employed by the Irish Ballet Company, as their
PRO, for seven years till 1981, when left the Company for a complete retirement.
Whilst in the Navy, and also the Police service, I played Rugby for the
Naval side, and also for the Met Police, and for Middlesex County. I joined the
Police Catholic Guild in 1948, and held office in that organisation for
twenty-five years, as Area Rep. I joined the K.S.C. and served in the
Westminster Council 66, and the Woodford Council, of Blessed William Scott.
Upon retirement in Ireland, I joined the Muskerry Colf Club, and the Inniscarra
Community Centre, in its formative years. I assisted with the Pitch and Putt
Club, and served a term as Chairman. I was involved in the re-establishment of
the Berrings Gun Club, serving as Chairman, then Secretary, and finally as
President. I later joined the Coachford Gun Club, by invitation, and have served
as President of same for a number of years.
My hobbies are Gardening, Golf, Shooting, and Fishing. I suppose you would say,
Country Sports, as I hunted with the Dripsey Hunt, on foot, for about eight
years, and served a term as Vice Chairman.
My wife Elizabeth, and myself celebrate our Golden Wedding on the 6th April 2006,
and thank God for all the favours, and happiness that he has granted us over the
years.
